Mercedes AMG wins first Blancpain GT Series Asia

  • the brit Hunter Abbott wins championship with only 1 point lead
  • Gruppe M Racing and Mercedes AMG win Team Cup
  • GT4 championship goes to Frank yu and Jean Marc Merlin

Everything came down to this last race. Marchy Lee and Shaun Thon with Audi R8 LMS car were still leading the championship with 1 point ahead of Hunter Abbott. At third place – Mitch Gilbert And Aditya with OD Racing in another Audi R8, but 15 points back and only little chance to take the title. Starting at Pole certainly gives them the edge to have a good finish.

The  season finale will decide it all. With Gilber lined up on pole and a 10 seconds success penalty to execute during driver change with Aditya, Bhuk starting 5ht with 5 seconds and Marchy starting at 8th. Every team can make it to the champion.

Mitch took the lead immediately after race began, but after making a mistake, Estonian Martin Rump with Team champion took the lead and even build a lead of 16 seconds. He had a tough season this year and together with Yoon, was never able to make a podium so far.

At the back Thong in the Audi had a spin, caused by Gruppe M Racing #888 Szymkowiak, who took seventh but received a 30 seconds post race penalty as a result, but leaving the Audi far back in the field and Thong handed over to Lee on 11th position far behind #999 AMG Mercedes with Hunter Abbott, who is 1 point behind the championship leader and already at 4th position at that time.

After Rump handed over to Yoon plus the penalty on Mitch car ended in a 22 seconds lead for the Silver Audi. Only after a spin of Yoon, Patel was able to catch him and took the lead. That was just a moment after the Indian got the message from his Team to Push harder to catch the leading car.

Now it came down to Hunter himself, as after his Pitstop with 5 seconds penalty he joined in on fifth. But Amateur driver Jeffrey Lee struggled a bit with the wet conditions, while Hunter had no difficulty to overtake him and taking back his 4th position.

Patel wins the race with 2.5 sec ahead of Craft Bamboo Porsche with Devon Modell and Andre Heimgartners, who drove a tremendous race starting from 11th and after a difficult start even 13th and kept continious overtaking car by car. Considering this wet condition, the Porsche showed an outstanding performance.

It was a tight finish for the third and a long deserved podium place for KCMG by Champion Racing. abbot was on the tail of Yoon and right in front of Dreysprings Lamborghini.

Marchy was fighting hard, but after dropping back at the beginning of the race, there was not more chance then grabbing 6th, missing the championship title.

Now one could have expected a better final race for the first Blancpain GT Series Asia championship with uncertain result until the checkered flag.
